DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 is a minor V4.1 Flash update. It does not introduce a new API model ID: production calls continue to use deepseek-flash, with unchanged request syntax and pricing. The update targets reasoning, coding, Agent, and vision performance while shortening task time and output.
What API users change
Do not replace the API name with DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017. The route remains:
{
"model": "deepseek-flash"
}
For DeepSeek Harness, DeepSeek recommends rc.1 or later; v0.2.1-rc.2 explicitly adds 1017 and Search/Fetch support. Projects pinned to an older DSH should upgrade in an isolated Profile and test model capabilities, image input, and reasoning levels.
Official benchmark changes
| Benchmark | V4.1 Flash | 1017 |
|---|---|---|
| Humanity's Last Exam (no tools) | 36.8 | 42.6 |
| Terminal-Bench 4.0 | 31.2 | 42.3 |
| DeepSWE v1.1 | 74.2 | 77.0 |
| ProgramBench | 20.3 | 29.1 |
| NL2Repo | 65.4 | 68.2 |
| Automation-Bench | 54.8 | 60.5 |
| Agents' Last Exam | 31.8 | 35.4 |
| Apex | 64.6 | 72.1 |
| Chartography | 78.9 | 83.0 |
| BabyVision | 89.6 | 92.5 |
Terminal-Bench 4.0, ProgramBench, and Automation-Bench are especially relevant to terminal, repository, and multi-step tool workloads.
The harness context matters: Terminal-Bench uses Claude Code, while DeepSWE uses Mini-SWE-V2. These numbers describe the model under those scaffolds, not a guaranteed result in every DSH Profile. Re-test Minimal, Standard, or a custom Plugin with the same repository, task, container, reasoning settings, and turn limit.
Recommended inference settings
The model card recommends temperature 1, top_p 1, a one-million-token context, and max_tokens of at least 256K. A normal task need not consume those limits, but too-small output caps can truncate large patches, logs, or multi-file delivery.
For cost-sensitive work, control the harness as well: cap turns, narrow the tool set, require explicit progress, and compact growing context. A stronger model does not remove the need for an Agent-loop budget.
Open weights and prompt encoding
The 1017 weights use the MIT license. DeepSeek provides new Prompt Encoding documentation and a deepseek-recipe reference, but no drop-in Jinja chat template. Self-hosted and custom inference services should implement the reference encoding instead of carrying forward an incompatible template.
DSH migration checklist
- Upgrade DSH to v0.2.1-rc.1 or later, preferably rc.2 for testing.
- Keep the API model ID
deepseek-flash. - Validate text, image, tool, and long-Session workflows separately.
- Compare turns, total tokens, wall time, and final quality—not one benchmark alone.
- For self-hosting, adopt the reference prompt encoding and retest stop/tool-message handling.
